Recently I got a feedback from my mate Vojta: "Kind of depressive stuff, yo..". Nothing more, nothing less just enough to make me thinking about my subconscious while taking the "December (part II)" photographs. To be honest I never got such a feedback before. 2011 year´s X-mas was a real breakthrough in our family. In fact this was a first time we spent the 24th December together with grandparents from my mother´s side. Before we moved they typically came on the 25th to our small flat and left in the evening. Our new home enabled us to spend a couple of days together without being packed like sardines, without a serious danger of arguments, providing plenty of both physical and mental space to all of us. What´s more I got a feeling that some old family disputes were dissolved as a charm. So where is the depression? Well, speaking about a new beginnig would be just fine in case we were all immortal. It´s easy as that. My grandparents got old and I realized it. Intentially I didn´t write such commentary right underneath the set probably waiting for a reaction like that. Although I am aware of the poor photographic quality this feedback means really something to me.

Becak - Cycle rickshaw from Yogyakarta. This small-scale local means of transport represents a pure joy of "pimping your ride"! For a while being inspired by these pics I was thinking about writing an essay named: "When a photoseries becomes a concept?" Well, uhm...screw it, let´s go bowling.

Afternoon at Papa Nurdin´s Place

In search of sea nomads/sea gypsys (so-called Baju or Bajo), we set sailed for a village about 15minutes from Kadidiri island (Togian archipelago-Sulawesi). Our mission was to both explore this settlement and heal Laura´s aching back.

Local physiotherapist Papa Nurdin is a well known and respected person among the entire community. During the Ramadan he´s not allowed to work (i.e. massage women) which means you have to wait almost till the sunset. Talking about the massage, Papa proved to be a pro and despite the language barrier he managed to relieve the pain. He hardly ever mentions the price or even talks about the money. It´s totally up to his client how much to pay him. The act of paying itself is supposed to happen as a thankful handshake basically hiding a note into his palm.

Morning At Lake Batur

The caldera of Bali´s largest lake is populated and includes the two main villages of Kedisan and Toya Bungkah. As the largest lake in Bali, Danau Batur is sacred to the Balinese. The locals largely rely on agriculture (tomatoes, garlic) and fishing for income. There is some significant profit coming from the hot springs and related tourism as well.

Every morning Urat and his son Nenga go fishing. During the night the temperature drops to 10°C. Around 5:30 A.M. they are already afloat setting nets. Meanwhile other villagers who have abandoned traditional way of fishing - keeping fish in floating hatcheries - still sleep at home.

Keeping fish in floating hatcheries changed the standard of living of the locals. However it brought some potential risks to the original wildlife in the lake. Diseases and infections tend to spread faster in warmer waters. Fish feeding brings unnecessary nitrates causing enormous growth of cyanobacteria. Currently there are two large hatcheries at the lake.

Urat´s grandchildren practice fishing skills in a concrete water tank to supply a local bistro.

Nona comes from Sumatra and works as a public bus conductor in Jakarta. Her loud voice, incredible energy, extremely lively and warm hearted attitude to the passengers works as a charm. "I don't have much money but I am funny!" Sometimes she speaks english just for practice even to the locals. I can still hear her singing: "Sloooow down, baby..." She's a true life and soul of the bus which is decorated with a banner "Ora et labora!"

I met Vojta for the first time in 2007 together with all his crew mates and some guys I had already known just by their nicknames from a photoserver. Besides it's been a bunch of cool photo-geeks the original crew had some pretty interesting rules and habbits. Must say their former official structure makes us laugh every time it comes into talk. The chairman, the vice-chairman and external members to hang out with. Vojta (the vice-chairman) has always been the life and soul of every party to us. That's probably why it took him so long to get his master degree ;) Nah just kidding. Today he finally made it! Well done sir, this is a bloody messed up tribute to you...

Me and Laura met this man at a regular flea market in Bratislava. He spotted us buying an antique frame which he was interested in as well. After a series of compliments to our choice followed by big ups to my camera he introduced us his idea of me somehow making a photo version of Hájnikova žena (The Gamekeeper´s Wife) a novel by Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav. However we did not really get it Ujo put a massive trust in our skills and insisted on us making his idea come true. What a huge ego booster! We had to think about that stuff for a while though :)

This is Mohamed who calls himself MoMo. I met him on the road while waiting for a hitch from Djerba to Zarzis (Tunisia). We shared the same car we caught and had some good time in Zarzis which was his hometown. Mo proved to be a great "laid-back chiller slash instant tourguide". After a nice lunch in a local bistro and a couple of mint teas we set on a town cruise on his bike. MoMo lives currently in Europe with his girlfriend.

I met Giuseppe (76) not far from his house in Vittoria Emanuelle street (Catania). He was sitting in front of a local church observing the buzz around. We tried to chat a bit however our conversation didn't make much sense due to my poor italian vocab. Wish I could ask him more things than just the function of his oxygen device and morning walks around his place. During our second meeting he introduced me to his friend calling me "mio amico Thomasso". He liked pidgeons and so did the birds like him.

Gianluca runs a designer Art Shop Kuken in Catania (Sicily). Half year ago he refurbished an abandoned place with some friends. He calls his shop his "bambino" and keeps tuning all details even you might feel it's almost perfect. Alimony for his baby make around a grand a month. Gianluca is a writer, publicist and an artist as well. He likes Kafka, oldschool Hip Hop and sweet liqueurs.
